A group of Dutch people revolted against their Lord, King Felipe II of Spain, but the Prince of Orange, the de facto leader of the rebellion, had fled to Germany. He attempted a few invasions to drive the Royal Army out, but they ultimately failed. Orange declared war on the King's representative, Governor-General Alba, and then invaded the Netherlands himself.
